# Pen settings file (MRECSET.txt)

> Fix the pen's clock and change how it records.

The pen keeps its settings in a small text file called `MRECSET.txt`. You see it when the pen is plugged into a computer, next to your recordings.

Most people only need to touch it once, to set the clock.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Plug the pen into a computer">
    Open it like a USB drive and find `MRECSET.txt`.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Open the file in a text editor">
    TextEdit on a Mac or Notepad on Windows works.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Change the line you need">
    Only change the value. Keep the same format that is already in the file.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save, then unplug the pen safely">
    Eject the drive before you unplug it, so the change is saved.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## The settings

| Setting | What it does | What we recommend |
| - | - | - |
| `TIME` | Sets the pen's date and time. | Set it to your current local date and time. |
| `VOR` | Voice-activated recording. | `0` |
| `BIT` | Recording quality. | `4`. Lower values sound noticeably worse. |
| `GAIN` | Microphone sensitivity. | `5` |
| `PART` | How long each file runs before the pen starts a new one, in minutes. | `60`. This keeps each file small enough to send on WhatsApp. |

<Warning>
  Write the new time in exactly the same layout as the `TIME` line already shows. If the pen doesn't pick up the change, write to [hello@tryjunoapp.com](mailto:hello@tryjunoapp.com) and we'll help.
</Warning>

<Note>
  A wrong clock doesn't break anything. Juno still transcribes the recording. It may just show up with the wrong date, under **Just added**.
